SMALLVILLE ACTRESS ACCEPTS PLEA DEAL IN NXIVM CASE

Following up on our November 30, 2018 article entitled “Alleged Sex Cult [NXIVM], Which Includes Smallville Star, Asks New York Court To Toss Indictments”: On April 9, 2019, “Smallville” actress Allison Mack (“Mack”) plead guilty to racketeering charges in connection with her role in “NXIVM.”

Prosecutors say NXIVM was a pyramid scheme which offers courses for thousands of dollars and then encourages participants to take more classes and recruit others to move up the ranks of the organization. Within the ranks of NXIVM, similar to a cult, there is a secret society called “DOS” in which female “slaves” were recruited to serve “masters” above them in the DOS pyramid, according to the government.

Prosecutors say Mack and others recruited “slaves” by telling them they were joining a women-only empowerment organization, and these women were required to provide “collateral” in the form of nude photographs, potentially damaging personal information and asset rights. The women were then told their collateral could be released for a number of reasons, including leaving DOS.

Mack allegedly forced some women who joined DOS to engage in sexual activity with Keith Raniere (“Raniere”), the head of NXIVM, and some women were branded in their pelvic regions with Rainere’s initials, prosecutors say.

Raniere has been behind bars since March of 2018, when he was arrested in Mexico. Mack, like the rest of the defendants except for Rainere, is out on bail.

She is due to be sentenced on Sept. 11, 2019.

Mack is represented by William F. McGovern and Sean S. Buckley of Kobre & Kim LLP.

The government is represented by Moira Kim Penza, Tanya Hajjar, Mark J. Lesko and Kevin M. Trowel of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

The case is U.S. v. Keith Raniere et al., case number 18-cr-00204, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
